I listened to an episode of Unexplainable and apparently some scientists are now working on de-extinction – bringing once extinct flora and fauna back to life.
The methods are specific depending on the animal, and for mammoths at least it's more of augmenting existing traits in modern day elephants to help them adapt to cold environments, making them more mammoth-like.
It's not a resurrected mammoth fossil but matching the gene sequences found from mammoth remains and making elephants express the similar sequences in theirs.
